Written by:

Vodka, salt, an onion, and an enormous bunch of carrots: what else do you need? If you’re Markus Wolf, apparently nothing.

In 1995, Markus Wolf — who served as Intelligence Chief of the Stasi for 34 years — published a Russian cookbook: Secrets of Russian Cuisine.

And there are secrets, sure, if you really want to know who Markus Wolf was drinking vodka with in the ‘60s. But me? I’m obviously just here for the recipes.

Next time I want to make bliny, I’m turning to Markus Wolf.

Pot roast with prunes, above a mediation on the importance of kasha: “The word porridge doesn’t capture the essence of what lies behind kasha.”
